Terminal operators look to data to clear congestion

The US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is conducting a review into how ports can leverage data to run more efficiently.

Terminal operators have been sharing the pieces of data they think could lead to congestion improvements.

One major piece of information terminals want to see is where each container is bound for after leaving the port. This would allow them to organise stacks of boxes appropriately and make it faster for trucks to move containers out of terminals.

"If we can identify what containers need to go in a 20-mile radius, or a 50-mile radius, or going on the interstate, then we can plan our yard better." said one operator.

There is also a call for the industry to move towards more real-time data, which will allow bother terminal operators and carriers to make quicker decisions and keep customers better informed.
